Healthy Lifestyle Choices May Reduce Lifetime Risk of Heart Failure

Heart failure occurs in an average 550,000 people each year in the United States. The lifetime risk of heart failure - the risk of ever developing heart failure during one’s remaining lifetime before dying from other causes - at 40 years of age is approximately one in five. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that men who followed a number of healthy lifestyle factors may reduce their risk of heart failure to one in ten.

This research appears in the July 22, 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“Previous relationships between various lifestyle factors and predictors of heart failure have been established,” said Luc Djoussé, MD, ScD, MPH, of the Department of Medicine at BWH, and lead study author. “But little was known about the joint contribution of these factors on the reduction of lifetime risk of heart failure.”

In a study of 20,900 healthy men from the Physicians’ Health Study I, researchers found that healthy men who had normal body weight, never smoked, got regular exercise, drank alcohol in moderation, and consumed breakfast cereal and fruits and vegetables lowered their lifetime risk of heart failure. A greater number of healthy lifestyle factors was associated with an increasingly dimished lifetime risk of heart failure, compared to men adhering to none of the six measured factors at highest lifetime risk, and those adhering to four or more at lowest lifetime risk.

During the follow-up more than 22 years after the study began, 1200 men had developed heart failure, and the overall risk of heart failure for the entire group was about one in seven for ages 40 years through age 70 years, with the risk dropping once men reached aged 80. Lifetime risk of heart failure was also found to be higher in men with hypertension than in those without hypertension.

“We know that hypertension is a contributing risk factor for heart failure,” said Dr. Djoussé. “However, we found that adhering to the specific lifestyle factors such as healthy body weight, not smoking, and regular exercise was associated with a lower lifetime risk of heart failure in the overall population and in men with hypertension, as well as those without hypertension.”

“By identifying a number of modifiable lifestyle factors, we can arm patients and physicians with targeted habits to help reduce the occurence of heart disease,” said Dr. Djoussé, noting the need for additional investigation into the effects of these factors on other populations.

Let’s not beat around the bush, nobody’s perfect. We all have our set of challenges when it comes to finding clothes we find flattering on ourselves, otherwise known as dressing for your body type. But if chosen well, the right clothes can hide the features we don’t like about ourselves and accentuate our best ones. Here I have outlined some (certainly not all) fashion rules to live by when dressing for body types that might be a bit challenging. Of course there are exceptions to rules, but keep these tips in mind when putting a wardrobe or an outfit together.

How’s the weather up there?

Particularly tall guys should say away from vertical stripes including pinstripes since they tend to accentuate height. Horizontal stripes and windowpane plaids are more flattering patterns. If you are thin to boot, wearing fabrics that cling is a bad idea, but wearing baggy clothes also brings attention to your svelt physique. Being tall and thin myself I have always been challenged with looking for the perfect fit in shirts, trousers, sweaters and suits. I have found that wearing shirts that are slightly fitted with spread collars and trousers that are straight in the leg, not tapered in any way, work best. Also, sweaters with a closer fit to the body, but not fitted are more flattering. And since suits with three buttons tend to lengthen the body, stick with one and two buttons.

Are you vertically challenged?

Short guys should avoid cuffed trousers, long suit jackets, and loud patterns. You don’t want to bring attention to your smaller stature. Pinstripes and other stripes (but not too bold) and dark solid colors are your best bet since they visually lengthen the body. Also, two and three buttoned suits with long lapels will give you a flattering, longer silhouette. And remember, when buttoning your suit leave the top button on two and three button suits undone since this will give the illusion of being taller. When it comes to ties, avoid Windsor and double Windsor knots – in other words stick with small knots. This will help you avoid looking like a kid.

Do you have junk in the trunk?

Heavyset men shouldn’t wear bold patterns of any sort. Pinstripes and solid colors, especially dark ones, are your friends. Bulky fabrics such as tweeds should be avoided when it comes to suits, and softer wools such as gabardines and super 100’s should be embraced. Don't think that you need special places or monuments to go on adventure dates. You can even do them indoors:

When the weather doesn't allow going outside, I bring my girls to the local shopping center. We sit to a cafe and talk a bit. Then I stand up and invite them for a walk around. We visit a few shops while shopping some clothes for me. Then we play bowling or go to the local bookstore. It's funny to laugh at the various love and sex advice books together with the girl.

The above are just examples, it's easy to come up with your own ideas. All you need is a little bit of fantasy and to know your city a little. Check out a local city guide paper for some examples or ask a friend who knows.

Should I "wait to call her back"?

If you've seen the classic cult movie "Swingers", then you probably remember the part where the guys are discussing how long a guy should wait to call a woman after he's gotten her phone number.

The scene really hits home for a lot of guys because it gets down to a real-world situation that we all confront and ponder.

I get a lot of emails from guys asking me what to do in this very situation.

The more I've thought about it, the more I realize that this particular question (and the answer to it) are part of a bigger, more important CONCEPT about how to deal with women.

Let me explain.

When a guy asks me "How long should I wait to call her?"
this immediately tells me a few things:

1) The guy doesn't feel like he's in control of the situation. If he felt like he was in control, then it he wouldn't ask, because it wouldn't matter. 2) The guy doesn't really "get" how male/female attraction works. If he did get it, then he'd be thinking in those terms rather than trying to figure out the exact best amount of time to wait before calling.

To put it differently, the "when do I call her back?" problem is part of a bigger concept, and once you understand that bigger concept better, then you'll have an automatic feel for when to call a woman back.

Most guys don't "get" one simple point:

If you want a woman to feel ATTRACTION for you, then you must behave differently than if you want her to feel that "just friends" feeling.

In the world of ATTRACTION, things are completely different.

For instance, our moms taught all of us guys to "be nice" to women. This usually includes being sweet and complimentary when first meeting them, answering all of their questions directly, and giving them what they want when they want it.

But if you want a woman to feel that INSTANT GUT LEVEL ATTRACTION right from the beginning, then you're going to have to put aside this kind of thinking, and start learning some NEW ideas.

For instance:

1) A challenge is generally attractive to women.

2) Teasing and being evasive is generally attractive to women.

3) Making fun of a woman's appearance in a flirty way, as counter-intuitive as it might sound, can lead to ATTRACTION.

I'm trying to communicate the idea that when you're dealing with ATTRACTION, you have to put aside old "normal" ways of thinking and behaving. I would like to mention one more point before getting into the specifics here...

These days, people are becoming very sensitive to having "techniques" used on them.

If a salesman uses a sales technique on us, we immediately get defensive and resistant.

If a panhandler asks for money in a way that smells of "technique" we pass them by without pityIf a business treats us like a "thing" or a number instead of an individual person, we avoid them or buy elsewhere.

We humans don't like having manipulation techniques used on us, and when we detect that someone or something is using one to get the better of us, we resist.

So let's get back to the "how long to wait before calling her back" issue.

If you think about it, every situation is slightly different. One time you might meet a woman in the morning at coffee, and another time you might meet a woman at a club at 1 in the morning.

If you wait too long to call her back, I think you run the risk of seeming like you're just using a technique on her and you come across as a player who's trying to do your thing on her.

When deciding how long to wait before you call or email, I think it's important to ask yourself this question:

"What will likely INCREASE THE ATTRACTION in this situation?"

Here are a couple of ideas I have used with great success:

1) Email instead of calling first. I personally email the next day. I'll start with a charming email to get the conversation started and then tell her that I'm going to call in a day or two.

This has the effect of making contact with her relatively quickly, but still creating anticipation because you haven't actually talked.

2) Call the next day, and make a joke about the situation. I might call and say, "Yeah, I was watching Swingers and they said to wait three days to call, but I was kind of in more of a one day mood..."

If you didn't get her email address and you MUST use the phone, just do your best to avoid being AVERAGE.

I personally believe that our attention spans as humans are getting shorter and shorter. We have more and more information coming in from television, newspapers and other sources - and we're getting cultural A.D.D. I think that if you wait too long, you're risking either being seen as using a technique, or risking being forgotten altogether.

But if you make the opposite mistake and call too soon (for instance a few hours later), you run the risk of being seen as a needy Wuss who has no life.

I'd like to tell you a story...

It's a story that you might find strangely familiar. Don't be alarmed. Once upon a time, there was a man who was very attracted to a particular woman. At first, she was just another attractive woman... but the more he got to know her, the more he began to feel attracted to her... and the more time he spent with her, the more that
attraction grew into a deep emotional attachment and affection for her.

But there was one problem.
As his emotional attachment grew stronger and stronger, he also grew more and more insecure.

Why?
Because he couldn't tell whether or not she felt the same way towards him. Sometimes she would say things like "You are so important to me" and "I'm glad that you're in my life"... but nothing ever progressed past the "friendship" stage. There was an occasional hug, an occasional kiss on the cheek from her... and once she even
held his hand for a long time while he talked about an emotional issue. But something was wrong with the picture.

She just wasn't acting like a woman that was "falling in love". She was acting like a friend. The insecurity that he felt became a spiral that amplified itself... and the more insecure he became, the more afraid he grew of "screwing things up" by kissing her or asking her to be his girlfriend.

Plus, the more insecure he became, the less time she seemed to want to spend with him. After spending many days and nights obsessing over this girl, the man finally arrived at the conclusion that if she only knew how HE FELT, that she would feel the same way. So he made a bold move. He TOLD HER how he felt. He confessed that he was in love, and that he would do anything to be with her. She looked at him with compassion in her eyes
and said "Thank you... I really mean that... but I don't want to mess up our friendship... you're too important to me...". This only confused the man more. He didn't know how to take it...

Did it mean that she really loved him too, but that she was afraid of something?
Did it mean that she wasn't ready for a long- term relationship?
Did it mean that she didn't love him, but that she was trying to give him a hint?
Did it mean that he hadn't tried hard enough?
Did it mean that he needed to put everything on the line and REALLY let her know how he felt?
He finally decided that he couldn't go on like this anymore... he had to be with her.
He had to make sure that she knew just how much he wanted to be with her... so he took a big step,
bought her a symbolic gift, and wrote her a long, long letter... again confessing his feelings. And then the unthinkable happened. She didn't reply.
He called her three times a day for almost a week before reaching her.

She made an excuse about being very busy, and said "I'll try to give you a call soon, I have to go"... and hung up... ...but he never got a call back. Over the following months, the man tried desperately to understand what went wrong... and what happened.

THE END

OK, I'm back.

Now, wasn't that a sweet story? Heart warming, huh? I know, I should keep my day job, and not take
up writing romance novels... Now, let's talk about that story.

That story is basically a MYTH. And I'm not talking about FICTION here. I'm talking about a story that rings true for a great majority of men. A story that is timeless. A story that resonates at a deep level because you can IDENTIFY with it. And why does this particular story resonate for most men? Because we've all been there in one way or another... at one time or another... and many of us have been there OFTEN in our lives.
Another thing that gives this particular story a lot of power is the powerful negative emotions that it stirs... as a result of the powerful negative experiences that it reminds us of...
Stories and situations like this one really FASCINATE me.
They fascinate me because I see them as an opportunity to UNDERSTAND and SOLVE the puzzles
that they represent. In this particular situation I think there is a solution. And it lies in understanding a secret that women know but MEN DON'T. And that secret comes down to the reality that if a woman isn't ATTRACTED to a man, all of his attempts to confess his love, convince her to like him, and court her BACKFIRE.

In other words, they not only DON'T WORK, they actually make things WORSE. In other words, the very things that a man does to try to make a woman LIKE HIM make her NOT like him. They make her run.
All those great intentions and emotional dedication actual cause the man feeling them to do things that make her go away. It sucks.
And I hope that by explaining the process of how this happens to you I'll help you avoid this
painful situation in your own future...

THE "INSTANT EWWW"

I'm always fascinated by the idea that we humans don't always understand the message that we're communicating to others... So often we think that because we WANT to communicate a message that others are going to NATURALLY understand what we're trying to say. Have you ever seen a guy in a foreign car that has wheels on it that cost more than the car itself... with his stereo blasting... and a muffler that somehow MPLIFIES the raw sound of the 4-cylinder motor...?
Have you ever thought to yourself "I don't think that car is communicating the message to women that he thinks it is"...? Yea, I have too. Well here's the deal: If you do something to "let a woman know how you feel"... but she isn't ATTRACTED to you, then it's going to backfire. It's going to trigger a feeling that like to call the "Instant Ewww". The Instant Ewww is just as powerful as the physical and emotional response of ATTRACTION. Once a woman feels it, YOU'RE DONE. It's over.
It's like hammering a RAILROAD SPIKE into the coffin. Once a woman feels the Instant Ewww, she will start behaving differently. In short, she'll disappear. So where did I get the concept of the "Instant Ewww"?
I got it from WOMEN. I have actually heard SEVERAL women use the word "Ewww" when describing how they felt about a guy that was "confessing his love"... of course, these were guys that weren't loved in return.
So what causes the Instant Ewww? And why would a woman feel it towards a man who was trying to be nice... a guy who was giving her a gift or telling her how he feels? Because if you think about it from HER perspective, you'll realize that the moment a you do something to "confess", you have created a TURNING POINT in the relationship. Up until that point, you were harmless. I mean, women always know how men feel. She already knew you wanted her. She knew it from the beginning. But now that you've started pursuing her and
talking about how you feel, you've created a NEGATIVE TENSION that is VERY uncomfortable.

You've triggered an emotion that is repulsive to women. And it does repel them.

The four button suit has been making a comeback in many retail locations, particularly those who primarily deal with polyester garments exclusively – International Clothiers and others of that mould being most notorious for marketing these particular suits. The four button suit typically cuts extremely boxy as well as being highly constraining for any man without standard measurements. It is debatable whether the four-button suit was ever truly at the height of style, and so it should be left on the rack.
Denim jackets for men can be problematic. When worn with other denim, they constitute what is jokingly referred to as the “Canadian Tuxedo”. If the style in the jacket is contemporary, the wash is just right, and they are worn with casual pants that work with the ensemble instead of against it – it could work. The great majority of the time, it looks terrible and does not co-ordinate with anything.

Some Dishonourable Mentions

While these dying trends may constitute the best of the worst, there are a few other classics that bear a quick mention.

Urban wear, essentially a code word for the descriptors : baggy, loose, ill-made, and gaudy – is most definitely seeing a downturn in popularity, coinciding with the strengthening market in high and business fashion for men.

Camouflage of all description and make is also faltering as a popular consumer print in fabrics, having diminished in popularity from it's height in the late 1990's to being relatively rare in both shirts and cargo pants today.

It's a fact of life for the modern woman, committing to someone other than themselves is scary stuff. Commitment means compromise.

I often hear women complaining that there are no eligible men anymore and that they struggle to find anyone who matches up to their most basic requirements as a mate. Think about this, you rarely hear a man saying that there are no eligible women anymore, though they may argue there are too many highly selective women. No, this lack of commitment used to be an accusation thrown at men wary of marriage, but these days you are more likely to find a woman with a good job who has taken over this role as the wary one.

I know lots of eligible men. They are young, unmarried, good looking, single, with good careers, lifestyles, are fit and healthy and looking for a serious relationship. In fact most men I know are serial monogamists! I asked one of my friends, Sean, 32, about whether he felt that the modern women he met were ready to commit and he said:

" I have wanted to settle down for a long time now, but women are too interested in their careers, want a casual lover with a fat wallet and nice car, or are simply too scared of the commitment levels required to live with someone. It seems to me, women just aren't ready to compromise their new found strengths and are very frightened of monogamy. Every time I have attempted to have a serious relationship, it is the girl who has panicked when things become more intense."

Sociologically, this is an interesting development and Sean's view is not alone. The fact is, there is a huge pool of resourceful, talented men out there ready to commit, but they are really struggling to find partners. Its important to note that there is no great difference in the number of single, available men and women and so we don't face an imbalance. So what is going wrong?

Well first of all, we have to consider social change. The social emancipation of women has been refreshingly vital in the last 15 years. Salaries for women have increased in many sectors, more women than men appear to be excelling academically and have moved into the mainstay career domain. A career has meant financial liberation allowing women to purchase their own apartments and cars and whole self-sufficient lifestyle unheard of two generations previously. Women are able to conceive later and they have a sexual liberty unparalleled in modern society. Indeed some men I interviewed saw women now as the main sexual aggressor and were "frightened of them." Women have become dominant in some areas and men are on the retreat, uncertain of their new role and what it may entail. Whilst I appreciate this may not be true in some of the smaller communities, the trend for city dwelling women confirms this general trend.

Marriage has become a taboo subject for many women, seeing it as a role for the subjugated with one-sided compromises that are just not worth taking on board. The average of marriage for a western woman has now increased from the early twenties to almost the early thirties, certainly 29 being a key age for many. Women instead have replaced early marriage with self fulfillment, meaningful life-content and career-path progression. This in turn means that a woman becomes instinctively very choosey about any life-partner who may interrupt this comfortable world.

In the meantime, men are struggling and perhaps seen as increasingly pathetic in their needy overtures. This is all too obvious in TV ad campaigns currently running. Whilst a man fights desperately to keep his loved-one, the woman has other ideas about where she sees herself ten years from now. It may well be settled with children, it may well be as a tax exile in the Bahamas, it may well be independent, financially astute and driven as well as successful. But she isn't going to take any old man along for the ride. She wants her man to shape up or ship out. And rightly so.

It is clear that relationships boundaries have moved. Many career women will not compromise their jobs for the sake of a relationship. It is as likely a man will move for his girlfriend , than she for him. With career comes financial independence and like it or not, many women struggle to understand that men were brought up to feel like the breadwinner. This is likely to relate back to the hunter-gatherer of human evolution so cannot be excused so dismissively. However, as many women excel in their given careers, so the man has to come to terms with the fact that he may not be the primary breadwinner any more. Indeed he may be more likely to stay at home and rear the children.

The red-blooded male is in a quandary. The media and Hollywood send him many different confusing signals as to how he should act and react. The problem here is that as yet no final solution has resolved. Women's lives have become dynamic and men are slow to react and evolve alongside. Consequently we can explain the reactionary rise of the Laddish culture alledgedly portrayed in magazines such as Loaded, FHM and via Jackass TV. Where a man cannot find his own sense of identity within a relationship, so he has divorced himself from considering relationship evolution. Be careful however, this is not to take on board the difficult situation modern men find themselves in with women.

As women evolve their own independence during their twenties, so they become sophisticated consumers and have acute sense of taste. Far more so than many men. This in turn means that they know exactly what they are looking for when you come along to ask them on a date. Get it right and you may be selected, get it wrong and you will be dumped without hesitation. And no, you may not be for keeps. The sophisticated new woman will often therefore see any committed relationship as similar to giving something up. You will often hear women say that they are seeking a man who will "compliment" their lives and add to their life experiences. There is no suggestion of compromise on their behalf however.

Women are also acutely aware that men cost women and can drain their emotional and financial wealth. A man can be hard work if he is not himself already emotionally self-sufficient. I am sorry to say it guys, but a lot of you are a little too emotionally needy as yet. This may relate to the current state of male self confidence in a world of increasingly dominant women. Women now value their freedom to express themselves sexually as never before and this certainly causes men a problem. TV shows like Sex and the City have covered almost every bastion of sexual discussion that men often feel uncomfortable with. Whilst women move forward increasingly confident in their own sexual behavior ands needs, men are struggling to take on the open mindedness required. Ask many men about the subject of oral or anal sex for example and they will run a mile. Men always thought sex was their domain, now the hunter has become the hunted.

Children is a key ingredient in the equation because however successful and confident the modern woman is, her biological clock may still tick. First of all its important to stress that some women are now happy to admit they never wish to have children, which is a change from previous generations. Some women are happy to admit they never wish to marry. But for those seeking children in their thirties, they have more options than merely seeking a stable semi-permanent relationship. Whereas men may have run from such a responsibility previously, now they are fighting to maintain it. If they can be replaced by a fertility clinic, they may be in trouble.

I don't have the answers to this issue, but I do see that women are increasingly dominant in relationships, whilst the men have simply lost their way. Whilst a woman may want her man to act like a man, it is a man with conditions. Whereas before a man could call the shots, now he must listen carefully if its not he who ends up being left on the shelf. Dating dislikes are a personal thing that's for sure. The things one person loves someone for can be the cause for divorce in another case. You may love the way they smile with one gold tooth, wink from under their sunshades, flick their dyed orange hair or paint their nails blue, that is your prerogative of course. There are though some common trends that we all share when dating anyone.

1. The top of the list by far in the league of dating dislikes is hygiene. You may laugh at this but believe me, it is often overlooked, especially by men. Turning up for a date doesn't just mean a quick rake of the hair and the straightening of a T shirt. Remember, first impressions count and may be the only impression you leave. Before a date get yourself to the chemist and then to the bathroom (guys) and sort yourselves out. Have a shave, wash your hair, scrub up well and get suited and booted. It is your chance to shine so make sure you are shining. Yeah, okay you may be a jeans and T shirt kind of guy. Leave that until later. Brush your teeth for two straight minutes, wear deodorant and Aftershave ( a little of the good stuff only please) and put on a shirt! If I need to refer a woman to hygiene then enough said.

2. Clothes are big dating dislikes. The wrong clothes that is. The amount of times I have witnessed a good looking girl dressed immaculately only to discover her new man wearing an anorak in a trendy bar, a T-shirt in a restaurant, jeans to the theater. It breaks one's heart. The fact is, a first date is very important. Once again its the time for you both to shine. You don't need to be wearing Gucci or Armani though it can help on occasions but you should be comfortable too. So smart casual can be good depending on your date. This is often why I recommend dating first at lunchtimes mid week. You are already dressed for work so you may already be wearing a suit. If not and your job is manual then leave the first date until evening. But for men you should wear a shirt and trousers and look presentable. No garish Hawaii kit at this stage guys. For women , something understated and stylish but with a hint of chic. Once again, too tight, too short or too fashionable may leave you feeling wrongly dressed for the wrong date and wishing you hadn't bothered.

3. Money. Hmm yes money. A big issue this one in the dating dislikes list. Too flash and your out. Too downtrodden and you are out guys. Too much chat about cash and you are out, too little ambition and you are out. Seriously, keep your cash conversations to a zero level and enjoy your date together. If you want to talk about ambitions avoid chatting about your brining desire for a a Lear jet and a house in the Hamptons. If you aspire to be Gordon Gecko cool but don't ram it down your date's throat. Money, contrary to many impressions doesn't impress at first, it simply polarizes views. It can leave your date feeling very uncomfortable either way. If you are dating out of your financial zone then don't try and pretend as that will be fatal. Instead always keep to something affordable, after all, you are spending time with someone, not their wallet or purse. If you do happen to be a millionaire, keep that until your 4th date!

4. Lying. People tell lies on dates, in fact most people do and this is a great dating dislike. They do this because they want to appear exciting and invigorating and interesting. This means that some of the things you are told are not true, or only partially true. Usually in any good dating scenario these little white lies get played out and over laughter, good conversation and a drink the truth escapes easily as you both relax. Whilst entertaining, little white lies show the path towards dating disaster. People are in fact seeking honesty and this is one of the basic building blocks of any new dating experience. Get caught out later at your peril.

5. Getting drunk. Here lays the true path to disaster. Okay if you are a student and young then much dating is to be had near the bars of many college campuses and I for one have many fond memories. However as we get older the anti is raised and so we need to keep out wits about us. Girlfriends have told me that the most promising dates they have been on have gone nowhere simply because their dates got lashed on Vodka or beer. Now 99% of the reason behind this is nerves. Many people are far better with a drink inside them than without. It's a relaxant, it calms nerves and fears and promotes a feeling of confidence. In that sense, a drink is good for dating, the problem is that it doesn't end there. If you go to far in the early stages of dating you can simply end up undoing all your good work. If you are nervous you can end up drinking too much and making a fool of yourself. So whilst drinking can be fine, leave it out at this stage of your dating game plan.

1. Look your best. Get some decent clothes and shoes. Women always look at your shoes even if the last time you checked your Nike's out was 1996. Get clothes that fit you, suit you and are contemporary. Don't just buy one outfit, sort out your entire wardrobe. If you can't take care of yourself, how are you going to take care of her? Oh yes and buy a good well tailored suit, there is no excuse not to.

2. Get your hygiene and styling sorted out. Down to the barbers and sort out your hair, get a decent style if possible. If you don't have much hair still get down to the salon and either get your head shaved or something you can handle. Then it is off to the shops with you for good quality cologne and a grooming kit. Yes that means some expense. Men are so often criticized for smelling bad. Get into a regular showering routine and smell good always. Women appreciate it.

3. Sort out your job if you have one. Women want a man who has some ambition in life so coasting along as a skateboard instructor is generally not going to win you a real catch (by the way I love skateboarding!). Any job is better than none, but knuckle down and sort out some direction in your life. Change job if need be but at least try and look like you you have something of a career. If you have a manual job, at least have some plans to work for yourself. If you already do, then you are on the right track but know what you are about work wise and have some idea of your future because they will be asking questions about your prospects even if they pretend it isn't important. It is.

4. Get your knowledge levels up. Make sure you are up to date with current affairs, watch the news and read quality papers. Women do not appreciate stupidity and laziness is no excuse either. Current affairs are important in showing you know all about the world outside. If you travel a lot then this will help tremendously, if you don't have plans to travel, get some. Being able and willing to sort out vacations is essential in the grand scheme of things.

5. Do not extol the virtues of drinking in the bar 5 nights a week. This will never win any fair princess's heart. If you love your booze sort yourself out as there are other things in life too. Taking your lady for a drink is fine, but give them the impression that you live in there will get you absolutely nowhere - fast.

6. If you love your sport then fine,. If sport is a religion you may have a problem but everything by degrees guys. If you are serious about dating then ramming the subject of soccer, ball games or football down your date's throat will put them off in record time. Sport to the uninitiated is completely boring and shows not only sheep mentality to a woman but lack of thought, creativity or inspiration. Millions of girls love sport too and that is fine but don't make your passion into a one-sided one.

9. Never expect sex on a first date. If all you are after is sex you have come to the wrong place for reading material. If you are looking for the girl of your dreams there is nothing more sexy than a patient man. You are easily capable of waiting for the right woman so do it instead of thinking with your balls.

10. Sort out your educational knowledge of manners, courtesy and chivalry. A woman likes being treated well, particularly with respect. Lose the coarse language, the swear words, the rudeness and the laziness. Know how to eat in a top restaurant, know about fashion and jewelry and in particular flowers. Know how to hold a door open for a woman, let her go first and help her with her seat. Listen to what she says but have opinions of your own too. Show her respect and manners at every step and you should not go wrong.

11. Start listening and stop talking. Keep your date interested but don't turn into a one man entertainer. She will bore of you quickly because she wants to talk about herself too. Listen to things she tells you about her and remember them. Women love to chat so you need to learn to listen to her. Remembering things she told you will impress her by the bucketful. Fact.

12. Give up smoking now.

13. Lean to dance even if you have two left flat feet. Women love to dance and dancing is a physical contact sport (or can be). It is also romantic and sexy. You can be the world's worst dancer, I don't care. But if you stay seated when she is on that dance floor you may as well not exist. If you can join Salsa and dancing classes all the better. You don't need to be Travolta but you should have an idea of the basics of rhythm. Get started today.

All this amounts to two things (even more if you're not shallow): 1) Shoppers want timeless essentials and; 2) Brands need to keep loyal customers.

To satisfy these two criteria, brands we know well are curating their offerings to identify essential pieces, creating new lines that invoke nostalgia for heritage American style as well as partnering with cutting-edge designers to stay relevant. Predictable, we suppose, but we're seeing some great fashion come of these timeless men's lines.

J.Crew "Always List"

J.Crew illustrates this story perfectly. Though the brand doesn't have deep American roots like Woolrich, Brooks Brothers or Wolverine (it started as a mail-order catalog in 1983), it quickly captured a broad following of devotees who respect the high-quality, versatile garments. However, this isn't the J.Crew of our college days. A lot has changed since we wore that one cotton rollneck sweater until it stretched and draped shapeless from our body. Last summer, J.Crew opened the Liquor Store in Tribeca, a men's-only shop with everything from Mackintosh coats and Thomas Mason shirts to wool ties and Red Wing boots. They've also become personal stylists to their customers, launching the "Always List" -- recommendations for what a man should wear, carry and know. Our favorite item from the list is the Selima for J.Crew Rivington Sunglasses, the result of a partnership with luxury eyewear company Selima Optique. They have all the appeal of Wayfarers but with a slightly more conservative design.

Banana Republic Heritage Collection

Banana Republic is another fairly young brand, dating back to 1978 and owned by Gap as of 1983. The store basically competes for the same audience as J.Crew, though their clothing has less of a preppy feel and more of a mainstream safari aesthetic, which you might expect since they share a nickname with Central American countries ruled and exploited for years by fruit companies. Banana Republic's latest collection is designed by Simon Kneen, former VP & Creative Director at Brooks Brothers. The cuts are slimmer and more fashionable, particularly in the BR Monogram Collection, the store's "most eloquent expression of style." We really like their double-breasted nail-headed suit, but with suits ringing in over six bills and with money clips just under $200, Monogram may be outpacing its target consumer. Fortunately, Banana Republic also launched a less-expensive Heritage Collection, which includes more casual garments in earthy tones as well as a few accessories like ties and belts. This Heritage tipped sweater-vest would be a fun addition to the business casual wardrobe, but overall the collection seems boxy and uninspired -- we don't really get it.

All About Genital Herpes: The Basics

Genital herpes is a disease caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), of which there are two types. Type 1 (HSV-1) usually causes oral herpes, an infection of the lips and mouth. Symptoms are commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters. In the past, HSV-1 was not known to cause genital herpes, but that is changing, especially among people who begin having sex at a young age. Still, in most cases, genital herpes is caused by the second type of herpes virus (HSV-2).

HSV-2 lives in the nerves. When it's active, it travels to the surface of the infected area (skin or mucous membrane) and makes copies of itself. This is called "shedding" because these new viruses can, at this time, rub off on another person. Then the virus travels back down the nerve to a ganglion (mass of nerve tissue), usually at the base of the spine, where it lies dormant for a while.

Who Gets Genital Herpes?

About one-fifth of all people aged 12 and up in the U.S. are infected with the HSV-2 virus that causes genital herpes, but as many as 90% don't know it. (By comparison, experts estimate 50% to 80% of adults have oral herpes.)

More women than men are infected -- one in four women compared with one in five men. One reason may be that the virus can infect a woman's genitals more easily than it can a man's. Genital herpes is more common among blacks than it is among whites, and it becomes more common as people age. The more sex partners people have, the more common it is, too.

How Is Herpes (Oral or Genital) Spread?

HSV-1 is usually passed from person to person by kissing. HSV-1 can also spread from the mouth to the genitals during oral sex (fellatio, cunnilingus, analingus). If this happens, it becomes a case of genital herpes.

HSV-2 is most often passed by vaginal sex and anal sex. But just as HSV-1 can infect the genitals and cause genital herpes, HSV-2 can pass from one person's genitals to another person's mouth, resulting in oral herpes.

HSV-2 cannot survive long on a non-living surface, so there is no real risk of getting it from a toilet seat or hot tub, for example.

How Can Genital Herpes Be Prevented?

Using a latex barrier (a condom or dental dam) during sex may protect you or your partner, but only if it covers the area where the virus is shedding. You should avoid having sex if you or your partner has visible sores on the genitals, and you shouldn't receive oral sex from someone who has a sore on his or her mouth.

It's important to know that HSV can be contagious even when no symptoms are visible.

Inhibited or retarded ejaculation -- This is when ejaculation is slow to occur.
Retrograde ejaculation -- This occurs when, at orgasm, the ejaculate is forced back into the bladder rather than through the urethra and out the end of the penis.

I am going to reveal a secret, so well-kept that you probably have not even heard of it. Are you ready for this? do you want to know how to get the woman of your dreams? ready... GET OFF THE COUCH AND GO OUT. Yes, the first step in meeting the kind of woman you want is to find one. Most often guys complain about how they are, lonely and can't find a girl that they like, or if they do, they let the windows of opportunity slip right by.

I want you to cut down on the time you spend on the Internet and instead go out and just observe the way people interact. Next step, after finding the girl you like, is to make her attracted to you. Now, this is not done in a fancy, shiny, sketchy way. You need to show your best attitude and let her relax and lead her to be comfortable during the interaction. There are many ways to attract a woman, such as attraction switches and so on (refer to my other articles). After you have built attraction, or you think that you have, the next step is to create a time arch. In other words, you need to have something in mind, an event or a party, to invite her to; this, my friends, will give you the right to ask for her phone number.

Let's backtrack a bit; building attraction. This is a mutual feeling of attraction between you and your girl, ar at least the illusion of mutual attraction. I want you to realize that unless the girl is attracted to you, you have no business getting her nubmer and asking her to meet up with you next week. That is one of the biggest mistakes that guys make when asking girls out. They judge the girl solely based on her looks and "assume" attraction, and that is probably why the girl flake on them.

With the phone number in your hands you can call her, text is preferred, and invite to the event. Guys, please keep in mind that this is so generalized here, and you just need to go out and try it. Trust me when I say that all it takes is getting off the couch and just starting up a conversation with the girl standing in line behind you at the grocery. And please keep in mind the above points.

also, there are many different dimensions to picking up women, such as body language, tone of voice, content of the conversation, and so on. One thing that I have found to be helpful, is to get the girl to talk and you stay quite, so you don't ruin things. Get her talking, but dont ask questions (read my other articles on how to do this).

As for keeping the girl, I do not have much experience and will leave that for others to answer.

As she entered the room, every eye turned in her direction, mine included. She was not the most beautiful woman present. There were others there who's faces could have graced the covers of Vogue or Elle. She was not the tallest, shortest, heaviest, or thinnest woman there. Others could place claims on those superlatives, too. Initially, it wasn't anything you could immediately put your finger on, but whatever it was, she just simply had it, and she carried it like few women ever could.

What makes a woman sexy is not always her most obvious characteristics. Sure, physical appearance has something to do with it. But it's much deeper than that. The sparkle in her eyes, the manner in which she carries herself, her smile, the way she dresses, the confident ease in how she walks, and the way she wears he hair will all demand some level of attention.

But how she interacts with others is also important. The self-assured demeanor that carries her effortlessly through each meaningless conversation, smiling, and never losing eye contact with whomever she's she's engaged. She doesn't gulp her drink, but rather sips, as if she savors the taste and appreciates it's delicacies. She gives space, but is never too far away. And she attracts attention, with having to demand it.

In conversation, she does not agree to everything uttered. She has her own mind, with views and positions on a wide range of topics. She isn't condescending when she is better versed on a topic, but she can also admit when she's wrong, and shows genuine interest when not totally comfortable with the subject matter. She is open to new knowledge, even if she'll never use it. She is comfortable with her femininity, but doesn't always have to defend feminism. To her, isn't so much a matter of male or female, but rather whats right or wrong. Without a doubt, she is her own person, but respects the potentially fragile ego of her male counterpart. She know how to balance being who she is, without taking away from the person that he aspires to be. She knows that women mature sooner that men, but doesn't have to rub it in his face.

A woman can be sexy wearing sweats or a gown, with hair pinned up or flowing freely down, while working a room or at ease in her home, chilling with the girls or out on her own. Male sweat sells men's lifestyle magazines

The best place to sell magazines could be in the gym locker room, according to a study which found that pheromones in male sweat makes men opt for a manly read.

Men under the influence of androstenol - a pheromone found in men's underarm sweat - find men's lifestyle magazines to be more attractive and are more likely to purchase them than those not exposed to the pheromone, suggests the research.

Michael Kirk-Smith, from the University of Ulster, UK, and Claus Ebster, from the University of Vienna, Austria showed 120 student volunteers three magazines: the female lifestyle magazine Allure, the neutrally pitched National Geographic, and the male lifestyle magazine Men's Health. The students were split into two groups with equal numbers of men and women. The first group wore a mask sprayed with androstenol and the second wore a mask permeated with a control solvent. The concentrations of the solvents in the masks were low enough as to have imperceptible odour to the wearers.

The two groups were asked to rate the magazines according to how masculine they found each, how appealing and how likely they were to purchase them.

The male participants exposed to androstenol rated Men's Health as significantly more masculine and more appealing compared with the control group. They also had a higher tendency to report that they might buy the magazine. Women appeared to be completely unaffected by the pheromone.

The researchers from the University of Exeter have shown that changes in brain activity, triggered by physical exercise, may help reduce cigarette cravings. During the study, ten regular smokers were asked to cycle at a moderate pace for ten minutes, after 15 hours of abstinence from nicotine.

The participants were later showed series of 60 images and changes in brain activity were studied with the help of fMRI scan. Some visuals featured cigarettes and would normally induce cravings in a smoker. On a second occasion, the same group was given an fMRI scan and shown the same series of images without having undertaken exercise.

The study showed that after no exercise the smokers showed heightened activity in response to the images in areas of the brain associated with reward-processing and visual attention. After exercise the same areas of activation were not observed, which reflected a kind of ‘default mode’ in the brain. The smokers also reported lower cravings for cigarettes after exercise compared with when they had been inactive.

Although it is still unclear exactly what caused the difference in brain activity following exercise, the researchers believe that completing exercise raises mood (possibly through increases in dopamine) which reduces the salience or importance of wanting a cigarette.

Another possibility is that exercise causes a shift in blood flow to areas of the brain less involved in anticipation of reward and pleasure generated by smoking images.

"Our findings add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that exercise can help people give up smoking,” said Kate Janse Van Rensburg, a PhD student at the University of Exeter, lead author on the paper. “This strengthens the argument that moderate exercise could be a viable alternative to many of the pharmaceutical products, such as nicotine patches, for people who want to give up smoking.

“A ten or fifteen minute walk, jog or cycle when times get tough could help a smoker kick the habit. There are of course many other benefits from a more active lifestyle including better fitness, weight loss and improved mood," she added.

Why men like wet kisses?

US scientists have found that modern man uses smooch to pick up traces of estrogen in a woman's saliva and thus gauge her fertility.

Anthropologist Helen Fisher of Rutgers University says that such behaviour may explain why men like wet kisses with more ‘tongue action’. While at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Chicago, Fisher said that wet kisses could also be an unconscious attempt to transfer testosterone to the woman, which would stimulate her sexual interest.

"Men see kissing early in a relationship directly as a step to copulation," she said. According to Wendy Hill, a neuroscientist at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, kissing may also serve as a way to assess the quality of a mate.

Helen said that research has shown that the majority of men and women rate their first kiss as either "the kiss of death" or the blossoming of a new relationship. The expert recently developed a personality test that measures four universal temperaments by using statistics from 40,000 people on the Internet dating site Chemistry.com.

Each temperament type was linked to activity levels of the brain chemicals dopamine/norepinephrine, serotonin, testosterone and estrogen/oxytocin.
